Leaders of the shopping center and retail industries continue to open up their hearts and their doors to provide cash, space, supplies, volunteers — and even blood — to the ongoing relief effort aiding victims of last week’s monster storm, Hurricane Sandy.

Westfield is making a cash donation in excess of $150,000 that will go directly to relief efforts in affected areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut where it operates, said spokeswoman Katy Dickey. Meanwhile, Westfield’s centers there are serving as community resources and gathering places for additional aid. “Since last week’s hurricane and with yesterday’s storm, our centers have maintained power, marshaled personnel and remained open, serving as staging areas for utilities and relief efforts and providing a safe, warm place for residents to shelter, eat, obtain needed goods and services and use charging stations for their electronic devices,” she said. One major aid station was set up in the west lot of Westfield Garden State Plaza in the Sandy’s immediate aftermath to dispense water and dry ice to residents without power.

CBL & Associates Properties has set up Red Cross modules on its individual property websites seeking donations to the American Red Cross, reading “Help those affected by the storm: Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.” The REIT set up temporary charging stations at Stroud Mall in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Harford Mall in Bel Air, Maryland, and York Galleria Mall in York, Pennsylvania, for power-less residents to charge cell phones, laptops and other devices, said Barb Faucette, CBL’s vice president of corporate mall marketing. CBL is also working with volunteer agencies to establish donation stations at malls for necessities to help victims, plus it will be donating fountain coins collected at centers to the Red Cross through year-end. Stroud Mall also had a t-shirt sale aiding victims, Faucette said.
