Fayetteville, NC - Ronetta Butts and her two daughters considered heading to Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Saturday. Not for the summertime splash of surf and sun, but to take advantage of the tax-free weekend at all the shops by the sea.

Instead, they drove to Fayetteville from their home in Riegelwood.

“It’s tax-free weekend and school-open time,” Butts said. “So we’re still having to shop for school clothes.”

Both daughters, Auldriona, 16, and 14-year-old Ashley – who are students at East Bladen High School – were toting bags of jewelry, pants, shirts and shoes from the trendy Charlotte Russe specialty retail store at Cross Creek Mall.
