Designers of the original enclosed malls wanted to move Main Street shopping districts to one place.
But they didn’t want to lose Main Street in the process.
That’s why malls frequently use the type of lighting reminiscent of a small town streetscape, said Barbara Littman, adjunct professor of architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Kean University.
