Fall 2013 Spin This Yarn

On the heels of the DIY explosion, comes along knitting, crocheting and even – looming!

What is the one craft that celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Sarah Jessica Parker share in common? It’s knitting and crocheting. And these women are not alone. According to the Craft Yarn Council, there are 38 million U.S. consumers who enjoy these crafts. What’s more, a whopping 66 percent of the crafters are aged 54 or younger!

What explains the attraction? Creativity is a powerful motivator for women in the 18—24 age group. A growing emphasis on handcrafted goods in sync with the Do-It-Yourself movement has also propelled interest. What motivates consumers to buy yarn? In a recent survey conducted by Craft Yarn Council, 74 percent of respondents said that seeing a yarn they like most influences their purchase. A pet project is also a strong influence.

By all indications, the knitting and crocheting trends will continue to stay strong and weave a new network of opportunities for you!

Rainbow Looming

Move over friendship bracelets! A hot new kid is in town. Rainbow looming, a new bracelet craft, is on fire. Thousands of youngsters and their parents are taking to this new craft. What is it? Imagine two plastic template boards, a hook, 24 plastic clips and 600 multi-colored rubber bands with which to create hundreds of possible designs.

A Malaysian immigrant, Choon Ng, created the concept while being employed with Nissan. In the beginning, Ng, had limited success selling the kits online. However, over the past year, YouTube videos and Facebook posts havev spurred the craft’s popularity. Many retail experts predict this trend to be as hot as Silly Bandz were back in 2010.
