Summer 2012 Doing the Numbers
Industry holiday data and what they mean for your specialty retail business.
Last holiday season, the NRF expected the retail industry to hire between 480,000 and 500,000 seasonal workers. Make sure to update your Rolodex to hire the prime talent early and well.
You want a slice of this pie. The average consumer spending on holiday gifts for family and friends (according to 2010 numbers) was nearly $500. “Other” gifts and decorations bit off another $100.
Christmas in October? It’s Inevitable
As much as we don’t want to admit it, Christmas sales are slowly encroaching on fall holidays. In fact, close to 40% of consumers jumpstart at least part of their holiday shopping before Halloween! How does this impact your holiday sales strategies?
Re-gifting? That’s so Yesterday!
No more awkward re-gifting moments. Consumers are increasingly including gift receipts with their gifts so friends and family can exchange and return gifts with no hassles. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2011 Holiday Returns survey, 61.9% of holiday shoppers said they provide gift receipts some or most of the time. It might be time to revisit your exchange and return policies.
The Magic of Mobile
According to Shop.org, 43% of smartphone owners have used their mobile devices to shop with. What’s more, 1.2 billion apps were downloaded during the holiday week between December 25-31 last year. With apps comparing prices, offering coupons and even parking guides, hopping on to that mobile platform is a marketing strategy that needs to be on your to-do list now.
