Minneapolis, MN – The Sports Authority Inc. has signed a lease to open a store on Nicollet Mall, the latest big retail news signaling a hot start to the year for downtown Minneapolis.

The Englewood Colo.-based sporting-goods retailer will take up nearly 22,000 square feet at Minneapolis City Center, on the corner of Nicollet Mall and Seventh Street, according to the center’s owner, Shorenstein Properties. The store, scheduled to open this fall, will be across the hall from where a new Saks Off 5th is opening in 2016.

Locating a Sports Authority in a dense urban area is not uncommon for the sporting goods chain. There’s a seven-level Sports Authority just outside of the Loop in Chicago, one in Midtown Manhattan and a mega store just outside of downtown Denver called the Downtown Sportscastle.
