Airports are a huge growth area for retailers, worth a staggering $42 billion annually.
Travellers are captive audiences, and cafes and bars in upgraded terminals have helped change the areas into more than just places to buy cheap cameras and perfume.
Restrictions on what can be taken outbound mean there has been an equally rapid expansion in inbound stores near immigration and customs.
In most airports the ‘‘gift shop’’ generally doubles as the exit door, through which travellers must walk before claiming luggage.
