Plymouth, MA – Owners of New England shopping centers have been struggling for years with the caprices of trends. Many figured the indoor mall model was a can’t-lose proposition. A haven of warmth during the freezing winter, the mall also serves as an air-conditioned paradise during those hot summer months.

But then the outdoor mall started taking hold in California, and New England wanted to get in on the action, regardless of the weather extremes. Outdoor malls started popping up all along the Eastern Seaboard and, in some cases, drawing shoppers away from the indoor malls. Following this trend, Colony Place has become enormously popular and some Kingston officials have said it’s part of the reason the Independence Mall isn’t doing as well as it once did.

The Shops at 5 is a different story.
