Sarasota, FL - In the world of malls, Southwest Florida is almost unique.

Construction of the $315 million Mall at University Town Center — expected to begin later this year — would put the region among only two spots nationwide where a new, regional mall is being built.

Data collected by the Directory of Major Malls shows 28 enclosed mall projects are scheduled to open in the U.S. through 2020 — but only UTC is close to being under way.

The only other big mall headline this year — excluding outlet malls — was the March opening of the City Creek Center in Salt Lake City. That mixed-use project was developed by Taubman Centers Inc. — UTC’s co-developer — and the commercial real estate division of the Mormon church.
