SHOPPING centre landlords are under pressure to offer shorter term leases to alleviate the pressure on tenants from the internet and reluctant consumers.

However, the centres that are anchored by food including cafes, takeaway outlets and supermarkets will thrive, according to a retail survey by Jones Lang LaSalle.

Evidence that more people are using malls with food was also borne out in research from Peter Kelly at Directional Insights, which showed that older shoppers like to stroll about and have a coffee, while young consumers still prefer to grab some fast food and head to the cinemas.
