‘Tis the season to give … to yourself?

Maybe. That’s just one of the shopping trends expected to play out in the weeks ahead as consumers head to malls in the nation’s annual rite of holiday spending.

Retail experts expect shoppers to cautiously look for deals, buy gifts for themselves and, at least on the day after Thanksgiving, crawl to stores as early as midnight. In spite of an economy burdened with 13.9 million unemployed workers and financial markets unsettled by debt-wracked European nations, consumers are expected to spend anywhere from 2 percent to 3 percent more than last year during the holidays.
