San Diego, CA – San Diego County has one of the strongest retail markets in the country, led by its 11 major malls, including the crown jewel, Fashion Valley.

The malls experienced some turnover in the recession but have rebounded nicely, analysts said. The county’s retail vacancy rate for the second quarter of 2011 was about 5.4 percent, and even lower for the malls, according to analysts. That’s compared with the national retail vacancy rate of 7.1 percent.

A challenge has been filling the space left by stores that closed in the past few years, such as Borders, Robinsons-May, Mervyns, Circuit City, Linens ‘N Things and Anchor Blue. Much of that space within malls has new tenants, although some spots are still vacant.
