Saint John’s largest shopping mall might be about to get even bigger.

Cadillac Fairview wants to expand McAllister Place by 5,388 square metres within the next three years.

The mall was built in the 1970s and is now more than 51,000 square metres.

David Greene, the mall’s general manager, said the proposed development would help the mall compete with other retailers, such as Costco, and meet an increasing demand for retail space.

“We’re just trying to keep the shopping dollars within the Saint John area,” he said. “This is becoming a retail hub and we just think it would be an improvement to our shopping centre.”
