Broomfield — Dan Owen, manager of a sunglasses kiosk at the FlatIron Crossing mall, found himself fielding more questions about cinnamon rolls than polarized shades Monday.

Owen worked his first few days of the new year at the N3L Optics kiosk without the scent of Cinnabon’s fresh-baked sweet rolls across the way. And Cinnabon, formerly located on the mall’s second level, was just one of four eateries to close its doors for good Dec. 31.

Other storefronts boarded Monday include Wetzel’s Pretzels, McDonald’s and Panda Express. Youth fashion giant Abercrombie & Fitch will shutter its FlatIron location later this month.

The closures are part of the first wave of substantial line-up changes planned for FlatIron Crossing in 2011, mall officials say. Officials point to the expiration of 10-year leases that many retailers signed — and decisions by business owners not to renew those leases — for the changes, and they say new businesses are already planned to replace them.

FlatIron Crossing celebrated its 10th anniversary in August.

“We’ve definitely gotten a lot of questions about the Cinnabon,” said Owen, who has worked at the mall for more than six years at two different businesses. “I was expecting it, myself, because it’s the 10th anniversary of the mall. Obviously, some people aren’t coming back. This all looks really promising to me.”
