Bloomington, Minn. — From top to bottom the Mall of America is packed this holiday shopping season, more so than any other year. Typically, the mall has about a 5 percent vacancy rate, but not this year.

“I think you could say safely we are at capacity although I suppose if somebody really wanted to come we could find a place in the hallway or something, but right now, for the first time ever in the history of the mall, 18 years we are completely out of space for Christmas,” said MOA’s Maureen Bausch.

Retail sales are a huge factor in determining the state of the economy, and if stores are willing to spend a couple of bucks to setup shop, it may lead to more consumer spending.

“Definitely a positive direction, absolutely my sales this weekend have definitely increased since sales in October,” said Sandy Kalczynski of Callister’s Christmas.

Callister’s Christmas is one of seven so called seasonal pop up shops which fill vacant spots in the mall this time of year. It’s also a place to look for a job.

According to a report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics retail holiday hiring is off to its strongest start in years.
