September 20th, 2010Build-A-Bear to have holiday temp stores
St. Louis, MO – Build-A-Bear Workshop is getting in on the pop-up store action.
The Overland-based retailer of make-your-own stuffed animals announced Friday that starting next month, it will open about 10 pop-up stores — or temporary locations — for the holiday season.
“The pop-up stores provide the company with a great opportunity given that the stores will be open during the company’s busiest seasons when there is a natural increase in mall traffic and when consumers are focused on gift spending,” the company said in a news release.
Build-A-Bear, which has more than 400 stores worldwide, said it might keep select pop-up stores open after the holiday season. It gave no information on the size or locations of these temporary stores.
Jill Saunders, a company spokeswoman, said in an e-mail that the company had nothing to add beyond the press release. But she did say that specific locations and opening dates would be revealed at a later date.
Pop-up stores are not a new phenomenon, said Jesse Tron, a spokesman for the International Council of Shopping Centers. Halloween stores, which are often open for just several weeks in the fall, have been one of the most common and popular types of pop-up stores. But the idea has gained momentum recently, especially with so much empty space in malls these days.
