Lancaster — One of the nation’s premier sporting-goods retailers will set up shop in River Valley Mall this fall.

Mall General Manager Tim Kaylor said Dick’s Sporting Goods is scheduled to open in mid-November in the former Macy’s location, which closed in 2007.

“I think it says a lot about the area we’re in and the market that Dick’s would want to come here,” Kaylor said. “They see that there’s potential — the market, the shoppers, the tenant mix of the mall, but also the community.”

Remodeling of the 50,000-square-foot facility is under way. Kaylor said the finished product will be a single-floor retailer with the same square footage, but some exterior entrances will be moved.

River Valley Mall already is home to one of the area’s few sporting-goods stores, Dunham’s Sports.

A spokesman for Dunham’s could not be reached for comment.

Kaylor declined to comment on the effect of Dick’s on Dunham’s.

“It gives the shopper another option,” he said.
