Joseph Palladino looked no further than Prime Outlets Orlando when seeking a place to open his first restaurant.

The reason? The outlet mall draws strong traffic despite the recession, which has kept most shoppers away from other types of malls and shopping centers.

“We’ve seen a steady flow every day,” said Palladino, managing partner of the 400-seat, 9,900-square-feet Vinito Ristorante, which opened in June at Prime Outlets on the north end of International Drive.

The nearly 1 million-square-foot Prime Outlets, which completed a $150 million expansion and renovation last year, is one of four factory outlet shopping centers in town.

The next largest one is the 9-year-old, 550,000-square-foot Orlando Premium Outlets on Vineland Road — which completed a 114,000-square-foot expansion last year and is owned by Roseland, N.J.-based subsidiary, Chelsea Property Group, a subsidiary of Simon Property Group Inc.

The two other local centers include: The 204,703-square-foot, 18-year-old Outlet Marketplace, also owned by Prime Outlets, and the 238,000-square-foot,

13-year-old Lake Buena Vista Factory Outlet Stores on State Road 535 near Walt Disney World.
