Marco Island — For most people a computer mouse is a computer mouse, so long as it works.
But for Roger Shaw and his wife, Susan, who run the online gift shop Avant Garde Gifts LLC from their Marco Island home, it’s an extension of your personality.
At least that’s what Roger Shaw said he’s finding as he builds his business around the Motormouse, a wireless mouse that trades in the traditional oval-shaped plastic casing for the scaled-down body of a Porsche 911.
The Motormouse isn’t an exact replica of the sports car – some of the lines were altered to make a more ergonomic device – but it’s pretty close, he said.
“It’s definitely a conversation piece,” Roger Shaw said.
And it’s starting to catch the eye of buyers throughout the U.S. and Canada looking for that one-of-a-kind gadget.
Avant Garde, which the Shaws started in June, introduced the Motormouse to North America after learning about the product from Motormouse designer and personal friend, David Bailey.
Roger Shaw, who is also vice president of the U.S. division of business consulting firm Mercuri International, wanted to transition to a business that didn’t force him to travel the globe. So he offered to test-drive Bailey’s Motormouse in the U.S.
