Salisbury — Talk about kneading sweet and salty. A sweet prune rooting near Salisbury University, and guaranteed to lead to addiction, blooms in a few weeks on South Salisbury Boulevard.

Fractured Prune, the Donut Shoppe doesn’t just serve doughnuts, “we serve an experience,” reads the slogan of the hot, hand-dipped franchise opening soon at 1303 South Salisbury Blvd. in the College Towne Center shopping gallery with the stucco hue where the Wicker Outlet was for years. “Caution, our donuts may be habit-forming.”

Even sooner, by May, the Philly Pretzel Factory arrives at the location promising to be as addictive, with dough warmed, salted and braided soft to order — just like it’s done in the namesake city. Another location also is planned for West Ocean City.

The combination of snack shops complements the tiny new storefront mall near the heart of the campus, a retail renaissance taking shape with trendy shops including Nancy N — the familiar boutique of women’s apparel that moved in earlier this month from the Downtown Plaza. Another neighbor is Fair’s Wireless, specializing in AT&T cell phones.

The “You create ‘em, we make ‘em” Fractured Prune started in Ocean City, where the corporate Web site claims in the 1800s Prunella Shriek once owned the land around what became Josh’s 46th Street Market. She’s described as a feisty woman who played tennis and ping-pong, and into her 70s competed with men in skiing and ice-skating competitions. With the bruises to prove it, locals nicknamed her “Fractured Prunella.” The doughnut shop was named in her honor, the company says.
