Even though the economy has “slowed things down,” the Zaremba Group remains committed to developing the Cedar Crossings shopping mall in New Lenox, a company official said Monday night.

Zaremba and the village continue to negotiate financial details and expect to approve next month the development agreement for the large mall, U.S. 6 and Cedar Road.

“Our glass is half full,” said Gary Hough, Zaremba’s senior director of shopping center development told the village board Monday night.
Of the 1 million square feet of retail space planned for Cedar Crossings, Zaremba has letters of intent to occupy 400,000 square feet and has another 300,000 square feet of “active prospects,” Hough said.

Although he declined to be specific, he said there could be a grocery/discount department store, a major sporting goods retailer and a theater chain.

“While other developers have pulled back, we decided to forge ahead,” Hough said, adding that New Lenox’s home rule authority was a “key ingredient” in that decision.

New Lenox voters granted the village home-rule status in the November election, which allowed it to impose a 1 percent village sales tax to pay for improvements need for the large mall.
