During the past two months, the east side mall has added several new stores: Mappins Jewelry, The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Subway, Freshly Squeezed and Wireless Wave.

And more are on the way.

“When we do bring in new stores to the shopping centre, the whole idea is to enhance our shoppers’ experience, to enhance the kind of mix and give the shoppers more choices at McAllister Place and at the end of the day give them an exceptional shopping experience,” said Tanya McCluskey-Kelly, the mall’s marketing director. “By adding lots of great brands and having first-to-market retailers, it provides our shoppers with so many options and increases their shopping experience.”

In all, the new retailers will employ 75 to 100 people.

Among them will be Aeropostale, which is scheduled to open next month. The chain, with more than 800 stores in Canada and 47 U.S. states, is a specialty retailer of casual apparel and accessories, targeting 14- to 17-year-olds. It provides customers with high-quality, active-oriented fashion it designs, sources, markets and sells.

Located next to American Eagle Outfitters, the Saint John store will be the first one for the American chain in New Brunswick, and expects to employ 30 to 40 people.

“It’s a great recognized brand and I think Saint John is totally excited to see it happen,” McCluskey-Kelly said. “We don’t have an Aeropostale in Saint John, so this is a first-to-market for us. It’s wonderful when you can offer the shoppers a new tenant and a new brand.”

McCluskey-Kelly said the mall is able to attract first-to-market tenants such as Aeropostale because of the strong economy in the Saint John area.

“Saint John is certainly doing very well – our economy seems strong at the moment, it’s booming in all the sectors. When it comes to retail right now, we’ve got a lot of great shopping destinations and we’ve got a lot of new stores and renovated stores in McAllister Place. In our market, it certainly seems like a shopping destination to be in.”
