Stint with family business behind him, Glimcher returns to retail development with Starwoodby Marla Rose
Michael Glimcher has spent half his life around malls and shopping centers — not hanging out at the mall, but developing and operating them.
His family developed Polaris Fashion Place and built up a stable of shopping centers including central Ohio’s Indian Mound and River Valley malls before the business, Glimcher Realty Trust, merged with Washington Prime Group in January 2015.
Glimcher abruptly parted ways with what became WP Glimcher — now known as Washington Prime Group — in June 2016, receiving a $7.5 million severance, stock and other compensation. With a one-year noncompete agreement, he laid low until last month, when he was named CEO of Chicago-based mall owner Starwood Retail Partners.
