Spring 2014
A Leg Up On the Competition

First came scarves; now it looks like tights and other legwear are kicking sales into high gear in the accessories department. Looking to glam up everyday outfits, consumers are increasingly turning to leggings and socks to lend a pop of pizzazz.

Industry experts concur that legwear is poised for increased sales. Data released by The NPD Group Inc./Consumer Tracking Service has dollar sales of tights increasing 12.2 percent over the past year to $775 million. Socks are also trending up. They grew at 3.1 percent over the past year to $5.34 billion.

Already a $6.62 billion industry, Fashion Times predicts breakaway legwear growth this year. What fashion trends can you expect? Look for the menswear trend to influence legwear across the board. The Times predicts prints such as houndstooth, stripes and tweed, to trend up along with colors such as magenta, crimson, burgundy, chalky white, mustard, grey, charcoal, blue and metallics. Texture also rules. Expect embellished legwear to carve its own niche in the category.

Looks like 2014 will be the year this fun and vibrant fashion accessory will finally get a much-deserved toehold in the specialty retail market.
