Kingston, MA – Independence Mall and Regal Entertainment Group have announced that construction of a new 58,000-square-foot, 14-screen stadium seating theater complex will begin this September.

A custom-built movie screen called the RPX: Regal Premium Experience to that rival that of one in Boston will set this project apart General Manager Bill Hamilton said. It will be similar to an IMAX theater.

Hamilton, who has been general manager of the mall since November, said the community will benefit greatly from the project as will the mall.

“It’s going to have a huge impact on the town and the immediate retail area,” he said.

Hamilton said it’s exciting to be able to announce when construction will start because it’s been a long, tough process to get to this point. Plans for expansion of Regal Cinemas were first announced in early 2004.

The permitting process isn’t over yet. A height variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals will be required to exceed height restrictions. Vertical expansion is planned.
